It appears that U.S. and Israeli military operations against the Islamic Republic have reached a critical stage. The Strait of Hormuz has reportedly been closed, and the United States has warned that unless it is reopened and its conditions are met, it will target Iran’s infrastructure. Meanwhile, some Iranians who had hoped such pressure might weaken the regime’s repressive apparatus and open a path toward liberation from 47 years of a military-religious dictatorship are now voicing a new concern: that a leadership shaped by apocalyptic thinking might even welcome the destruction of the country’s infrastructure, so long as it ensures the regime’s survival. This situation underscores a bitter question—whether, in the eyes of the Islamic Republic, the only “right” it recognizes for its people is not the right to life, freedom, a healthy environment, and cultural vitality, but rather the pursuit of nuclear ambitions and long-range missiles.
