Elegy for a Murderous Puppet Mourning Its Dead Puppeteer

The head of the Islamic Republic’s government, appearing at the United Nations while holding up a photograph of the regime’s slain leader, declared: “We have been victims of terrorism.”
Only a few months have passed since the mass killing and brutal suppression of protesters who had taken to the streets in exhaustion and anger over the regime’s political, economic, and cultural failures. The Pezeshkian government also played an active role in carrying out that crackdown, which was conducted under the direct orders of the regime’s former leader.
This planned repression, together with the Islamic Republic’s extensive financial and military support for its armed proxy groups across the region, is among the evidence cited by its critics in describing the regime as deeply repressive and implicated in terrorism. Seen in this light, the words of its head of government at the United Nations come close to a dark joke. A dark joke made possible by institutions like the UN, which too often give a voice to repressive governments rather than to the people they suppress.
