The Fuel Crisis

The fuel crisis in Iran is no longer a distant possibility. In Tehran, the closure of a number of gas stations, long queues lasting for hours, and disruptions in fuel distribution are signs of a crisis that could grow dramatically in the months ahead. Reports point to a daily gasoline shortfall and declining strategic reserves, while even government officials have acknowledged that domestic production is insufficient and that fuel prices may need to change.
Such a crisis is about far more than gasoline. In a country where transportation, livelihoods, and everyday life depend heavily on fuel, shortages or a sharp rise in prices could quickly turn into a social crisis. And at precisely such a moment, we should expect the government’s propaganda machine, aided by its cyber forces, to seize on every possible distraction to divert public attention: rumors, sensational stories, a controversial interview with a celebrity, the return of a once-banned public figure, or some provocative remark by a famous person. The more sensational, the better; the more irrelevant to the real crisis, the more useful.
