Four years after the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, European governments and the European Union have repeatedly expressed solidarity with the women and protesters of Iran, condemned the Islamic Republic’s repression and imposed sanctions on those responsible for human-rights violations. Yet these declarations and measures failed to create a level of political pressure or deterrence capable of preventing the regime from escalating its repression. In December 2025 and January 2026, a new nationwide uprising was met with a far broader and deadlier crackdown, with the EU itself referring to thousands of civilian casualties. The contrast is stark: while Europe continues to publicly honour the ideals of “Woman, Life, Freedom”, its response has so far failed to impose consequences commensurate with the scale of the violence inflicted on those who embody them.
